Our Story

Unbroken Motion began with the extraordinary journey of Matt Fumo. In 2017, just days after turning 19, Matt suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors told his family he would never move again and would remain on a ventilator for at least a year.

Matt refused to accept those limits. Through relentless determination, the right therapies, and the unwavering support of family and friends, he surpassed every expectation. Within a week, he was breathing on his own. Months later, he was walking again. Years later, he completed a triathlon. His recovery became proof of what’s possible when resilience meets access to care and a strong, supportive community.

Matt’s experience also revealed something important: recovery isn’t just physical. What truly carried him forward was positivity, laughter, and the encouragement of people around him. That combination of care and community is the foundation of Unbroken Motion.

    Matthew Fumo

    President

In 2017, Matt sustained a spinal cord injury that completely changed the direction of his life. He had to learn how to navigate recovery from the beginning and figure out what it meant to rebuild independence piece by piece. Through that process, he saw how important access to therapy, adaptive equipment, and the right support system really is, and how quickly progress can stop without it. For the past three years, Matt has been working at Project Walk, where he sees these same challenges every day and works alongside individuals and families who are fighting to keep moving forward. That’s what led him to start Unbroken Motion, focused on building a space where people feel supported, understood, and part of a community that wants to see them succeed.

    Zachary Fumo

    Vice President

After tirelessly nursing his brother back to health, Zach got involved in the spinal cord injury community through volunteering at Project Walk. He was not only inspired by the people he met, he also gained good friends in the process, and wants to help create that same sense of connection for others. A self-proclaimed “man of the people,” he’s focused on creating a community where individuals can come together regularly, whether it’s for adaptive group activities, events, or even just Dave & Buster’s, to enjoy themselves and have a good time.

    Julia Fumo

    Secretary

Julia earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences, inspired by her experiences growing up around hospitals and helping care for her dad during his illness, as well as supporting her brother Matt after he became paralyzed. Through these experiences, she saw firsthand how important community support is for both individuals and their families, and how much it can shape the recovery journey. That perspective drives her commitment to helping create the same kind of support system for others facing mobility challenges.
